Building an MVP That Doesn't Suck: 6 Rules to Follow

The concept of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) has been heavily distorted. Too many founders interpret "Minimum" as "broken, buggy, and ugly." But an MVP isn't an excuse to release a poor product; it's a strategy to test core hypotheses efficiently. Here are 6 rules to building an MVP that actually works.

Rule 1: Solve One Problem Intensely

Your MVP shouldn't try to be a Swiss Army Knife. It should be a scalpel. Find the most painful problem your target audience faces and solve only that problem exceptionally well.

Rule 2: Don't Compromise on UX for Core Features

Fewer features do not mean bad design. If a user is testing your core feature, the experience of using that feature should be frictionless. If they churn because the UI is confusing, you haven't invalidated your idea—you've only proven your UI was bad.

Rule 3: Fake the Complex Stuff Early On

If your app requires an intricate AI algorithm to generate reports, don't spend 3 months building the AI before you know people want the reports. Instead, implement a "Wizard of Oz" test. Let the user request a report in the app, manually generate it on the backend, and send it to them. Validate the demand before investing in automation.

Rule 4: Track Analytics from Day One

If you launch an MVP without tracking user behavior, you're flying blind. Set up PostHog, Mixpanel, or Google Analytics. You need to know where users drop off, what buttons they click, and how often they return.

Rule 5: Define "Success" Before Launching

What does validation look like? Is it 100 signups? Is it 5 paying customers? Set a quantitative goal before the launch emotional rollercoaster begins. This gives you an objective baseline to determine whether to pivot or persevere.

Rule 6: Charge Money

The only true validation is willingness to pay. A free user saying "this is a cool idea" is drastically different from a user pulling out their credit card. Even if it's heavily discounted, attach a price tag to your core value proposition.
